Tragic Fire in Nightclub

http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/90-dead-nightclub-fire-brazil-18327334

A deadly fire in Brazil killed more than 230 people. The fire started in a nightclub while a band was playing. The band used pyrotechnics to enhance the spectacle, but ended up catching the building on fire. Fire and rescue was called but weren't able to save everyone. 230 people died due to their only being one exit from the club, which was blocked after awhile. Families came to see if their children had made it out, some didn't receive the answer they were looking for.

I believe that there should be more exits in buildings to prevent tragedies from happening. If there were more fire exits, many people might have been saved. I believe laws, although generally ignored in gang controlled and corrupt countries, should be put in place requiring a minimum of 3 exits in each public building in Brazil. There should also be a way to safely operate the pyrotechnics that are used for entertainment purposes.

Do you think bands should use pyrotechnics? If they didn't use them, the risk of fire wouldn't be there, saving us from another horrible tragedy such as this one. And if mores exits were in place, do you believe it would have helped at all?

  1. Trevor, You need to add more of your own response before you ask others what they think. Should be summary of the article and your opinion-response

  2. I agree for the most part with you. Of course there should be more than one exit in buildings, especially ones like this nightclub. More exits provide better safety in unexpected situations like the fire. But I do disagree about bands not using pyrotechnics. As a rock fan (and especially a big fan of Trans-Siberian Orchestra, who uses pyrotechnics), I would say that pyrotechnics add to some shows. I do, of course, see the potential risk to using pyrotechnics though. Fires of course could break out, and in that sense, I do think that bands should think and plan very carefully when planning to use pyrotechnics. Safety should always come first, so the pyrotechnics should always become the factor that will be adjusted based upon the place of performance.
